Smith Sunglass Technology

Smith’s ChromaPop polarized lens technology makes for some seriously stimulating optics. Their proprietary combination of color management tech and polarization gives you unrivaled clarity in all conditions. The ChromaPop lenses are designed to maximize color and contrast by improving the speed at which your eyes can process the information resulting in truer color and optics.

This advanced material can accept the sophisticated dyes and tints needed to create Smith’s proprietary visual experience. So, ChromaPop delivers high contrast, select color filtering and color enhancement better than other lens materials commonly used in sunglass and prescription sunglass lenses today.

Techlite Polarized Glass

Glass lenses are ideal for situations when you’re worried about getting them scratched. Glass provides up to 12x more scratch resistance than standard plastic lenses, and the Techlight Polar Glass is 20% lighter than other glass lenses on the market. A lighter lens makes for Italian engineered all-day comfort and durability.

Smith Polarchromic, combines the glare-free benefits of advanced polarization with UV sensitive, self-tint-adjusting photochromic technology to bring you the most advanced sunglass lenses ever to grace your face.

But how’d they do it!? It takes a precise amount of silver halide crystals infused into the glass lens material during creation. We’re talking big bang level excitement, with slightly more precision. These microscopic crystals automatically change orientation in response to UV light causing a shift in tint to increase or decrease the Visible Light Transmission (VLT). The result? You get a lens which offers crisp optics and soothing light levels all day long.

Tapered Lens Tech (TLT Lenses)

Think back to middle school science. There you were, playing with prisms, ignoring the teacher, but you remember something about refraction. Right? Well, when light passes through something it refracts or changes course. If left uncorrected, this refraction can cause visual distortion and eye fatigue.

Lucky for you, the brains at Smith paid better attention in school and developed Tapered Lens Technology (TLT) to straighten out the incoming light rays. What this means for you is that you see with 100% accuracy and maximum comfort.

Lens Tilt

The base curve is the radius of the sphere measured from the back of the lens. Smith features styles with 6,8, and 9 base lens curvature. Models that include 6 base tend to be more flat relative to your face. While 9 base styles provide the maximum amount of wrap around your face.

Lens Construction

Smith uses the some of the best lens materials in the world - Techlite Glass for optical precision and Carbonic for impact resistance. Not only does Smith use top quality materials, but they also add the finest polarized filters and finish lenses with multi-layer mirror, Anti-Reflective, anti-scratch, and Hydroleophobic lens coatings. The end result is an artfully crafted lens that preserves color perception and delivers optimized optical clarity and precision in all environments.

Repels moisture, grease, and grime. A barrier between your lenses and the world. That means fewer wind tears while bombing hills, less finger prints to obscure your view, and pure optical glory.

Handmade Acetate

Using the material Acetate allows Smith to come up with some of their funkier color frames. It takes 33 handcrafted steps to create such a huge variety of color combinations that possess depth and a distinct character that just isn’t possible with any other material.

Grilamid® TR90

Grilamid® TR90 is an exceedingly light and durable plastic that will maintain its shape under all temperature conditions. Most plastic frames from Smith are built with this durable material.

The PivLock™

TThe PivLock™ Interchangeable lens system features an awesome temple and lens interface that provides an unobstructed field of view. Engineered to minimize frame weight while maintaining a secure fit, both the temples and nosepiece remove easily for quick lens changes.

For nearly 50 years Smith has been a steward of the outdoors. The Smith customer is a socially conscious hard charger. Great days in the water, dirt, and snow are made better when we are mindful to protect the environment we recreate in.

We incorporate the revolutionary, Rilsan® Clear material into what has become the largest eco-friendly sunglass collection in the world. This material allows us to create lightweight, durable frames, that are over 53% bio-based.

Rilsan® Clear

Rilsan® Clear is derived from the renewable, non-genetically modified castor plant. Characteristics of this material include flexibility, lightweight, high elasticity, remarkable toughness, and excellent chemical resistance. Most importantly, this material is not petroleum based.

Why is 53% bio-based important? Through extensive testing and field trials, Smith has found the correct balance of materials required to sustain performance and durability, while reducing our environmental impact.

Our brand heritage was forged with a passion for the outdoors. This responsibility continues to drive us today. We recognize our obligation to be considerate to the environments we revere. With an unwavering commitment to further develop, we explore the use of sustainable manufacturing materials into the Smith product of today, and into the future
